Sue's current style – reflective of Abstract Expressionism – currently
moves in two directions: one boldly projects swathes of bright, contrasting
colors to divide her canvases into irregular shapes and sections; the other
floats quiet soft-edged pastels to define forms. Sue is drawn to
abstract art because, for her, it simplifies this complex world.
When inspiration emerges from a deep emotional level, her soft colors and
edges may evoke quiet places filled with positive energy, or upon occasion,
darker regions fraught with heaviness and peril. Sometimes her work is less
emotional, it reflects abstract impressions of shapes, things, landscapes,
cups and apples -- whatever strikes her as a worthwhile subject at the moment.
But every painting is inspired by something deeper, something just beneath
the surface.
Occasionally, Sue returns to her love of more traditional landscapes
which she paints in all mediums. "I seem to always end up painting water of
some sort, I guess it's difficult to take the web feet away from someone
who was born and raised in Oregon"
All of Sue's work emphasizes good composition and design. Her trained
knowledge of color garnered from many years of studying and teaching shows
the sophistication of a seasoned painter. Like so many artists, she has
alked the road of realism, landscapes, and portraits (which she still does
on commission occasionally), and beyond.
Sue has received many awards, participated in juried exhibitions, as well
as one- and two-artist shows. She has sold her work at galleries in Taos,
Scottsdale and most recently, Arte-Misia in Sedona, Arizona.
